However, his advice was not for people like us – who are not even able to read Qur'an correctly, nor do we have in-depth knowledge of Quran, nor can we differentiate between Nasikh and Mansookh.
Neither nor are we aware of different types of Hadith like:
Sahih,
Maruf,
Mursal,
Maqtoo,
Mauquf,
Hasan,
Zaeef,
Gareeb,
Muztarib,
Mauzoo, and several other types.
His advice was meant for his disciples and students who were the most highly learned Ulmas and Fuqhas of the time.
How can we, without having even basic knowledge of Islam, dare to criticize someone like Abu Hanifa ﺭﺣﻤﺔ ﺍﻟﻠﻪ ﻋﻠﻴﻪ, who was a fountain of knowledge.
Moreover, the above-mentioned advice of Imam Abu Hanifa ﻋﻠﻴﻪ ﺭﺣﻤﺔ ﺍﻟﻠﻪ was duly followed by his scholarly students like Imam Abu Yousuf, and Imam Muhammad etc.
A group of great scholars comprising of about forty Fuqhas and Ulemas, most of them were disciples of Imam Abu Hanifa ﺭﺣﻤﺔ ﺍﻟﻠﻪ ﻋﻠﻴﻪ , minutely and thoroughly examined and appraised the entire work of Imam Abu Hanifa ﺭﺣﻤﺔ ﺍﻟﻠﻪ ﻋﻠﻴﻪduring the compilation of Hanafi Fiqh.
These scholars have not only just revised and amended Imam Abu Hanifa’s rulings but also have replaced them, wherever applicable, with more authentic ones.

Not everything is clear in Qur’an and hadith hence the need for the 4 imams and also Ijtihad/istimbaat/Qaiyas.
Some people just don’t understand this, let us provide the habits of the Sahabah.
“Indeed when Abu Bakr [r.a] was faced with any matter (to be ruled on) and he did not find for it (a solution) in the Kitaabullah or in the Sunnat of Rasulullaah [s.a.w], then he would say,
‘I make ijtihaad with my opinion, if it is correct then it is from Allaah Ta`ala and if in error, then it is from myself and I seek forgiveness from Allaah Ta`ala.’”

Umar [r.a] wrote to the famous Tabiee, Qaadhi Shuraih (r.h) advising him to practice ijtihaad after exhausting all avenues in the Qur`aan Majeed, Sunnat and Ijma.

Similarly Abdullaah Ibn Mas`ood [r.a] also advised making Qiyaas and ijtihaad after Ijma [Masnad Daarmi, page 34].
This was the practice of Abdullaah Ibn Abbaas [r.a] that when he found no solution in the Kitaabullah, Sunnah or Abu Bakr and Umar [r.a], then he would say, “This is from my opinion.”

Assalma Alikum all, With all due respect my question is that although Imam abu Hanifa rehamuall is well know scholar but when one look at the old books b4 4th hejari like tabqat ibna saad and tareek ul kabeer one can easily conclude that Imam abu hafia rehmatulla was Zaif ravi and among ahlol Rai and even Imam Dau Qutani didnt even considered him in Tabee. However, if one looks in history after 5th hejari than one can come to know that it was kateeb bagdadee rehmutual who considered Imam abu hafia remutal as tabee but again considered him Ahalol rai and even in Gunetul talbeen his follower (motabeen) were considered as Murjeea..like if u read tabat ibna sad than u will come to know that imam abu yousaf rehmutall was considered as Ahlol rai and even Imam Muhammad Rehamatulla. So my question why follow an Imam when he seems to be controversial especially in the eyes of those seqa muhadseen who were in Kharul Quran. JAzak Allha Khair.
